Varsity Blue

The YBA varsity blue team went home champions in the one day tournament at Hardwood Palace . They started out with a big win against the Mission City Maulers 65-42. Remi Barry and Aaron Hendricks each had solid games from trading off threes to getting good traps for steals on defense. Cody Borst picked the game up coming off the bench with huge rebounds and some great put backs. To provide height in the middle, Ryan Salmonson was a key player for rebounds. In the second game, they beat AC Marin Navy 57-44. With a slow start at the beginning, John Davis pushed through and made some beast plays in the post. Eric Gee hit a couple of threes to put them back on top which they stayed the rest of the game. Mark Burns and Colin Lee helped both ends by creating good shots and getting good defensive stops. For the championship game, they beat EDH Trojans 56-38. Everyone played very well and created open looks for each player. Colin Lee was a factor in controlling the tempo by playing great defense and getting the ball up the court. John Davis helped get good rebounds to dish up the court to Cody Borst and Eric Gee for layups or jump shots.

Varsity White

The YBA varsity white team started out the day strong with a win over the Chico Blazin Heat 44-35. With the struggle of shooting in the beginning, they had to rely on their defense which I would say never looked better. Quincy Shelby and Derek Ainsworth had some huge defensive stops which ended up being dished to Colton Nelson for the layup. In the second game, they beat Patterson Pride 48-29. Jordan Broyles started the game off strong with some great offensive plays. Tony Costa and Garret Rodriguez also had good games scoring and also stopping the ball on the defensive end. Because they won both their games, they played in the championship game against All Star Predators but lost 54-41. They played pretty well both offensively and defensively with help from Darren Centi and Kyle Peterson. Jordan Broyles was huge on the boards which allowed more scoring opportunities for all of our guards.

JV Blue Divsion-5/8

Game 1  YBA Blue 53 Team Cal 55

Summary: In our first loss in the last 9 games, we fell to the eventual 2nd place Team Cal on 2 free throws w/ 3.7 seconds left in the game. It was a well played hard fought game that we had the lead and had opportunities to win. Team Cal executed better than us in the end to win. We needed to further capitalize on all the turnovers we forced on Defense (20 steals, 31 Turnovers). We played a great team game as well with 18 assists total as well led by Nolan & Darrell who had 6 & 5 respectively. It was a game that we learned from our loss. James-17, David-13, & Kyle-9 led us in scoring.

Defensive MVP: David S. 7 steals

Mr. All Around: James T.17pts, 2 assts, 3 rebs, 3 stls

Game 2 11 AM
YBA Blue 90 Marin 78

Summary: Playing against a small, fast, feisty uptempo team that made 17 3pt fgs, we beat them up and down the court to win a track meet type game. We rebounded well w/ 42 team rebounds, and in particular on the offensive end (16 offensive rebounds). It was a team game the whole way as every player scored at least 3 points & every player except 1 had at least 4 rebounds & 1 assist. We were led on offense by David-15 pts, Kyle-14pts, Nolan-13pts, & Luis-11 pts. I t was another well played team game as we finished with 20 assists led by Darrell again w/ 6 assists, while Nolan and Luis had 3 each. The Defense was solid those little guards are excellent shooters for Marin. It was an excellent bounce back game after that close loss.

Defensive MVP: Entire blue team
Game MVP: Darrel P. 7 pts, 6 asts/ 1 TO, 4 rebs, 1 stl Led by Example

Game 3 4:30 PM
YBA Blue 90 Tracy 27

Summary: In the Consolation game we came out flat and Tracy was leading after 1 quarter 13-11. We discussed playing to our peak level not the other team and never looked back. it was 48-17 at halftime. We played excellent defense, both in the full court and in the half court. We had a good shooting game as Luis had 4 3pt fgs & Kyle had 2 3pt fgs. We had over 30 steals as a team, led by James who had 9. We had 24 assists and continue to become more unselfish as we grow to trust each other out there. Everyone had a good game led by Luis, Ceron, James, & Nolan.

Defensive MVP: All 7 players present
Game MVPs: Luis P. (excellent all around game) & Ceron C. ( versatile and no fouls)

Coaches Final Thoughts
Another good weekend, I saw great progress towards playing as one team together all the time... Our Defense is rounding out despite the 78 point second game, we are starting to understand the effort it takes to be a "pressing" team... We might just turn some heads this weekend if we continue to believe and develop the faith in one another and learn the loyalty that comes with that act of having belief in each other... We will be ready this weekend so show up at practice ready to run through walls...

We have begun this trip as parts, not the whole and as we continue to form into 1 team through the fires of practice and the tests of competition, the by-products of our efforts to achieve: trust, faith, fortitude, courage, & hard work. Become the foundation for the successes yet come...

"I seek those who seek competitive greatness, a real love for the hard battle, knowing it offers the opportunity to be at your best when the best is required" Whose quote is this?? If you are on my team it would be worth your time to tell me... first 3 correct will be accepted

Game # 1 Phenoms 45 - YBA 42

We were involved in a very physical game. In the 1st half Anthony Pederson & Matt Gruber kept us in the game. However, in the 2nd half we only scored 18 points. We have been having trouble finishing our shots & playing our game of quick passes & waiting for the open man.

Game # 2 Yba 52 Comets 36

By the end of the 3rd quarter, we had the game under control. Offensively we were led again by Anthony Pederson & Matt Gruber.

Dom Driggs controlled the offense by spreading the scoring to his teammates with 5 assits. Caspian Hemrick again played his usual aggressive defense.

Game # 3 YBA 48 CCR Black 37

Our team was led in scoring by Dom Driggs & Anthony Davina. Dom Driggs ran the team as a true point guard. Caspian Hemrick again shinned on defense with 6 rebounds.

Overall the team played very well. We will need improvement from our bench players as well as our starters if we our to succeed in the upcoming qualifying tournament.

Byron Kaim, Assistant coach

9th Grade White

Our first game was against CRR Red. We made eight 3 point shots which built our lead. We played great defense and took care of the ball committing only 4 turnovers for the game and we cruised for a 49-29 victory. Cole Jacobs led in scoring with 13 and Jay Bennett led with 7 rebounds. Our next game was against the Pharoahs and again we played great defense and took an early lead. We won the game 50-39 and advanced to the championship game. Again, Cole Jacobs was the leading scorer with 13 and the leading rebounder with 9. Spencer Gregg also added 9 boards. In the championship game, we faced the All Star Predators, a very quick, athletic team. We fell behind in the first quarter and could not recover. We lost 32-60 and finished in second place. Taylor Cherry led our scoring with 8 points and Spencer Gregg led with 5 rebounds.

8th Grade Blue

Strong performances in all three games on Saturday led to a Championship for the 8th Grade Blue team in the Xtreme Hoops D1 bracket. The guys came out on fire against the Mission City Maulers and Solano Hurricanes, resulting in impressive wins to put us in the Championship game against the Carmichael Red Raiders Black. Great team effort all day, but Aidan Naughton and Lake Lutes stood out in our final game, leading us to victory over CRR and Championship hardware! We also welcomed a new player, Nick Howe, to our team. Nick jumped right in and made significant contributions in all three games.

Kennan Bridge

8th Grade White

YBA started off the one day tournament a sleepy but woke up and gained momentum. As the day got longer we got stronger finishing with 2 strait wins!

1st game was we lost 31-41 to Chico Rim Rockers. The Rim Rockers were not imposing but won by playing team basketball and made the extra passes. Justin Holmes was a beast near the basket and Shane Bayne played inspirational with his all over the court mentality. We got a boost of potential with new player 6'5 Center Joe Worthy he will be a very imposing force once he gets comfortable and imposes his will on his opponents.

The 2nd Game VS Davis the Dawgs turned up the Defense with its aggressive press and half court trap. We held the Davis team to 38 points and was very energized by Justin Holms taking a charge in the 3rd quarter.

In the final game for 3rd Place the YBA White team again turned up the Defense and holding the Marin Storm team to 25 points. Inspired by Grant Mcelvain 9 points and 11 rebounds, Justin Kinney 14 points and Shanes Baynes 5 steals.

Winning easily 41-25. Play of the game was a back door bucket to Shane Bayne from Justin Kinney. The team continues to get better each week!

7th Blue

YBA 7th Blue

The blue team played a strong tournament to finish 3-0 and win their division. Overall, with just a few exceptions the team hustled on defense and moved the ball well.

YBA 71, Carson Valley Basketball 11

YBA began the game with fire and utilized that same Black Diamond press to close the 1st quarter with a 24-0 lead. The team maintained the defensive intensity throughout the game, finishing the game with 26 steals and 7 blocked shots. Scott Zabrowski and Jackson Sterling were constantly in the passing lanes and combined for 20 of those steals. Mitchell Holt and Michael Beachley each recorded double-doubles. Scott, Nicholas Clough, and Grady Collins moved the ball extremely well to record 14 out of the team's 21 assists.

YBA 46, Marin Storm 16

YBA again brought the defensive pressure from the opening tap to jump to a 12-0 lead. Our effort waned in the 2nd quarter, and Marin got back into the game but still trailed 21-10 at the half. YBA clamped down after the break and held the Storm to only 6 points the rest of the way. Max O'Rourke hit some timely outside shots, and Jared Flowers had a solid game going hard to the basket and chasing down loose balls on D. The offense was very balanced with 7 out of the 8 players recording at least 5 points and no player reaching double figures. MItch used his size effectively inside and provided good help in the paint.

YBA 56, Cal Reign 36

The boys were apparently bored with grabbing early leads, so they tried the opposite in this game and trailed 11-0 against a hot-shooting Cal Reign team. With Grady working to inspire his teammates during the breaks, YBA maintained their composure and rode a hot streak of their own from Mike to close within 4 points by halftime. Nicholas Clough led a 14-1 third quarter run with outstanding defensive pressure on the point of the 1-3-1 Bull defense to claim the momentum for our boys in black. Despite a couple of late gaffes on the press break, the team responded to Coach Collins' challenge to "finish strong" by staying intense on D and contesting every pass and shot attempt with Jackson using his length and speed to control the baseline. Gavin Smith contributed good outside shooting and solid floor play throughout. Mike finished with 23 points and 4 blocks.

Player of the tourney: Nicholas Clough

7th Grade White

The 7th grade White team had a very successful weekend going 3-0 and winning their bracket. The first game against the Fairfield Warriors the Dawgs were still sleeping when the referee tipped the ball off and
before we knew it we were down 8-0. Luckily Jared Flowers stopped by Starbucks on the way to the game, and after checking in he provided the needed shot to get the team going. Some mad Dawg defense and two buzzer beaters by Colin McHale and Max O'Rourke gave the Dawgs a two point lead. The second half the Dawgs kicked it into gear and ended up winning 44-37.

The second game against the Buhach Thunder saw Dawgs fall back asleep in the first half ending the half down by two points. We decided to put on the famed Ken Gee "Black Diamond Press" which completely changed the tempo of the game. Jaeden Calton, Vance Gregg, and Colin McHale led the front line charge. Zac Chodes sunk a couple of key baskets and grabbed some big rebounds to help silence the thunder, and the Dawgs brought home the win 47-34.

The Dawgs decided it was not a good idea to give Spirit Got Game a big lead in the Championship so they kicked it into gear once the ball was tipped. Colin Hawkins and Connor Milnes dominated down low, and Max O'Rourke hit some big shots that knocked the spirit out of their game. In the second half, the Dawgs had major foul trouble with 2 players fouling out and 4 other with 4 fouls. With good defense and some key baskets the Dawgs were able to hold on to their lead and win the Championship 54-50! Coach Gregg was happy the game did not go into OT!!

6th Grade Blue

6th grade blue had a well deserved weekend free of basketball.

5th Grade Blue-5/8 Spring Shootout

The YBA 5th Grade Blue team went 3-0 during the XtremeHoops one day tournament. With their first game being won by forfeit, they did not let that throw their game off. They were still able to get three games in, though it was not the normal schedule one would expect. The first game played was against the Reno Ballers White team. The DAWGS got off to a quick start, since they were delayed and anxious to play, and never slowed down. Bryson Zorich led the team with 24 points and 6 steals and Joshua Ohara contributed 16 points in the 74-11 win.

The second game played (keep in mind the DAWGS won their first scheduled game by forfeit so the whole day was “off”), was against the same Reno Ballers White team. The opponent did have the services of a couple of new players that were not at the first game, but the outcome was the same. Bryson Zorich again torched the team for 24 points and had 7 assists. Jashon Lewis had a great all around game with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 8 steals and 4 blocks! Alex Martinex also had a phenomenal game contributing 20 points and 10 rebounds and Joshua Ohara was the "Thief of the Game" with 7 steals. “Hustle Player” of the game was Alex Schneider for great plays that don’t show up in the stat book, such as boxing out and many tipped passes.

In the championship game, the DAWGS played the Reno Ballers Blue team. It being their third game of the day, and immediately was played after their 2nd game, they got off to a slow start (10-2 at the end of the first). But, they picked it up and finished the game on top 77-46. Jashon Lewis was on his game again with 20 points, and Alex Martinez contributed 22 points and 7 rebounds. Alex Schneider dropped in 10 points on 5-6 shooting, and both Joshua Ohara and Bryson Zorich each had three "trifectas" (three pointers) each.

Overall, the DAWGS were on their "A" game. For the tournament, they averaged 73 points a game while shooting a scorching 60% as a team. They had great ball movement, and suffocating defense. All of this with a short roster (only 5 blue team players, with one sub in 2 of the 3 games).

Coach's thoughts: The kids did great! What I was most proud of was the fact that we boxed out very well! We've been working on this for weeks, and I think the kids have turned the corner on this concept. We had many times when different players were boxing their man out of bounds! Also, we worked well on defense TOGETHER as a team. Opposing coaches asked how we get our kids to "shoot so well" (Bryson and Alex Martinez shot 67% and Jashon shot 60%, and the lowest individual shooting percentage was 47%- which is still great!) and commented that they thought we are one of the top teams in the area. Another comment by an official was that he said it looks like we must practice "40 hours a week" (due to us playing a strong game). These are the things we work for. It's not so much about the wins or losses, but that the kids get better as individuals and as team players so when they reach higher levels of play, they will be able to compete.

Coach Lance

3rd Grade

This was a weekend of both wins and losses, but the third grade DAWGs can walk away with heads held high. They are learning that losses can be just as important as wins, as lots can be learned from both.

One thing that really stands out from our games this weekend is our amazing DAWGs defense. We have some terrific defensive players overall, but a couple that really stood out during our Saturday games were Matthew and Bennett. Way to get in there and block those offensive players and even get their hands on that ball with these blocks. Bennett was a key scorer in our last game as well, with 8 points.

We may have even out rebounded that zippy Red Raiders team too, and held them while our offensive game took shape. We were able to bring our score up from being down by 12, to within 1 point by deploying a very active "on fire" full court defense (led by Andrew, Nathan and Dante), but got out scored during the last quarter. Matt also earned the "BIG Scoop Ice Cream" award for ripping down 8 of those rebounds and both Matt and Bennett look promising to reel in the "Double Big Scoop" for 10 rebounds in upcoming tournaments if they continue with their blocking out, hustle, and competitiveness.

Josh had some great moves, shots and passes in our games, and Cole was right in there with some tricky shot fakes trying to throw off the defense. Dante's ability to sneak in and force turnovers continues to be a big asset to the team. The third graders had some great reads, and our overall ability to move as a team is really taking shape.

One last thing that deserves mentioning is our outstanding group of parents, grandparents, siblings and friends who fill the stands each week and shout from the rooftops words of encouragement and praise for each and every player. The boys really do seem to respond well to this. No matter what, win or lose, the DAWGs crowd is there after every game with hands outstretched for hugs and high fives for our hard working, deserving players!
