Welcome

Hi and welcome to YBA's weekly newsletter, The Dawg Pound. My name is Cyndee Ohara, my husband Lance is the 5th grade blue team's head coach. Last week, Ken asked if I would take on this project, and I am honored to do so.  It is my pleasure to put together this newsletter/blog for the club. I anticipate this to be a great way to keep all YBA members and families in the loop. Thank you for your cooperation and support.  Enjoy!

Varsity Black-April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

The YBA Varsity Black team won both their games on Saturday with victories over Nor Cal Hoopsters 53-38 and Nor Cal Select 74-52. John Davis had a great first game from the inside and Aaron Hendricks had his usual game from the outside. Cody Borst and Nico Ruiz both had sparks off the bench to help get the win. In the second game Remi Barry had an all around good game with help from point guard Justin Soria and other post player Marcus Hendrick. In the Championship game on Sunday, they fell to E-Time Hoops 66-59. Mark Burns and Eric Gee created some runs for YBA that either pulled them ahead or got them closer. John Davis was a threat in the post while Aaron hit some key threes. Although they had a great tournament, they missed the heart and soul of the team, Spencer Butterfield who is coming back from an injury that happened last weekend. We all miss him and can’t wait till he comes back.

Varsity White-April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

The YBA Varsity White team started the weekend out rough with a close loss to Sierra Express 37-44, and to Chico Tropics 36-48, but bounced back on Sunday with a strong win over N Your Court. In the first game we had offensive plays by Quincy Shelby and Bryson Bryant and some good defensive stops from Austin Hightower and Derek Ainsworth. In the second game we had huge plays by Colton Nelson, Derek Ainsworth and Kyle Peterson. There was tremendous defense by Garret Rodriguez and Darren Centi. For Sunday’s game Michael Burkhalter led the team to victory with an impressive effort both offensively and defensively. Colton Nelson, Darren Centi, and Quincy Shelby all had solid games to help with the win.

JV Black-April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

Game 1 - The team opened the Xtreme Hoops Tahoe Qualifier vs. Team Cal
in the 1st round. We started off slow against Team Cal but fought back
to tie the game at halftime. The 2nd half was dominated by the black
team, only giving up 9 points in the half and cruised to an easy
victory. Carter Beatty led the black team in scoring while the team
showed great passing and unselfishness.

Game 2 - YBA Black played the Chico Tarheels and dominated from the
opening tip. After the 1st quarter, the score was 12-0. The team showed
a balanced attack and continued to dominate on the defensive end. The
team hasn't given up more than 32 points in their last 5 games.

Game 3 - YBA Black advanced to the championship game on Sunday and met
up with YBA Blue for the championship. Both teams decided to split the
teams and have a fun scrimmage. It worked out well for both teams and
the parents got to see an enjoyable game.

We travel to Oakland next weekend to play in the Drew Gooden
Invitational. Black will look to continue with their early season
success and stay undefeated. After this weekend the team improved to
14-0. GO DAWGS!

JV Blue-April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

YBA Dawgs Blue 54 Red Raiders 53

Summary: The closest and easily the most exciting game of the season! The game winning shot was made by David Saghatelyan. It was an offensive rebound and put back with aprox. .12 seconds left in the game. The game itself was a great and even match up throughout with both teams going back and forth with leads. The Red Raiders led the 1st half and we took the lead with a great full court press fueled 8-0 run which was part of a 14-4 run that put us up by 10 going into the 4th quarter. This run was fueled by the whole team committing to all out effort on Defense (I always capitalize Defense, please don't un cap it). After a few mental breakdowns in our zone we were leading by 2 with 1 minute left. After we forced a turn over we had the ball on their baseline with 12.7 seconds left. We then turned the ball over on the inbounds and fouled the best player in the Red Raiders, and of course he makes both to go up 1 with 11.6 seconds. Nolan Eger then missed an NBA line shot that David followed up to win.

Defensive MVP: the entire team
Mr Clutch: David Saghatelyan

YBA Dawgs 62 Extreme Hoops 47

Summary: A rematch of last weeks tournament finale. We played them much better this time around. The team came out and played our game and forced them to adapt. Led by the outstanding play of Jr. Sanchez, James Trujillo, & Ceron Cherry we put the game away early in the 2nd half. Nolan Eger played well in limited mins with 2 three point fgs in the 1st half. Our newest player Darrell had his 1st significant minutes and played excellent defense, was unselfish, and is an excellent teammate. We won as a team and are coming together as group and quickly learning how good WE can be. Another impressive performance for the team.

Defensive MVP: Evan Orrick for outstanding interior play against bigger, stronger players
Fastest Learner: Nolan Eger

YBA Dawgs 73 YBA Dawgs 73

Summary: A celebration of YBA's excellence during this tournament. Playing a split squad all star game the MVPs were Kyle Duffin (Tom) & Luis Parache (Adam). Everyone had outstanding performances as every player except 2 scored. Luis hit 4 3 pt fgs, inc 3 in a row! And had a spectacular and 1 lay up on a fast break. Kyle consistently knocked down jumpers and played very good Defense both individually and help side. Also having good games were Ceron, David, Darrell & Evan. Nolan, James, & Jr all played well in spurts. It was a very fun game and I know the players & I had a blast! We were declared co champs and had a huge 19 player Trophy presentation. Darell made his 1st shot as a Dawg! a 3 no less. Congratulations to both teams on an excellent tournament!

Defensive MVP: Ceron Cherry for his 5 block performance

Finishing thoughts from Coach...

An absolutely spectacular weekend I couldn't be happier with the performances and growth that we exhibited! We are just starting to come together as a team and we look really good as a team...

I am blessed to have the players I have and believe that the last 4 players to our team Jr. Sanchez, David Saghatelyan, Darrell Poincer, and on Wednesday we will have Andre C... Who joined with the original 6: James Trujillo, Evan Orrick, Luis Parache, Kyle Duffin, Ceron Cherry, & Nolan Eger... I truly believe that IF we continue to strive to be our best as coaches, players, teammates and young men everyday we will continue to be successful as well as win games.

P.S. As this is my first season I was unsure the environment that I was entering but had heard nothing but the best and I am happy (and relieved) to say that I am PROUD to be a Dawg and am a friend, coach, and mentor to any Dawg of any age who needs me.

9th Grade-Shaw-April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

Game 1 YBA 56 - Tri-City 26

Offense and defense was exceptional

Game 2 YBA 55 - Nor-Cal 39
Great ball movement. All players were tough and aggressive.

Championship Game - Chico 44 - YBA 33
Lost to a great athletic team. The boys gave it their all. We played Chico evenly the first half and had a 2 pt lead. In the 2nd half, we could not contain their speed/agility and our shots were just not falling.

Overall, the boys had a good tournament and I was proud of them all.

Outstanding offensive player of the tournament was Matt Gruber.
Outstanding defensive player for the tournament was Elliott F.

9th Grade-Garcia-April 24-25 Qualifier

The 9th grade YBA Garcia team had a great weekend. Our first game on Saturday was against the Chico Tarheels. We got out to an early lead and never looked back and won 45-31. Cole Jacobs led our scoring attack with 7 points and Cody Moffitt led with 6 rebounds. Our second game on Saturday was against E-Time Hoops. We again got out to an early lead and won 44-27. Cole Jacobs lead in scoring with 14 and Spencer Gregg led with 5 rebounds. With 2 wins on Saturday, we played for the championship on Sunday against Spirit Got Game. We got out to a slow start and got behind, but fought back to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but lost 34-43 and finished in second place. Cody Moffitt led the scoring attack with 16 points and Taylor Cherry had 8 rebounds in the loss to Spirit Got Game.

8th Grade Blue-April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

It was a "character building" weekend for the 8th grade Blue team, losing 2 close games--one in overtime--to end up 1-2. There were some strong individual performances, but Cameron Graham had a "breakout" weekend with strong rebounding and aggressive drives to the hoop. It was Cameron's last weekend playing with us, and he finished up on a high note!.

8th Grade White-April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

The 8th Grade White team had a successful weekend culminating in a 2nd place finish in the 8th Grade White Division. The team rolled through its two games on Saturday, 52-11 and 56-15. The team used pressure defense to jump out to big early leads in both games. Luke Jordan stood out in the second game hitting four 3 pt shots, while Justin Holmes had a strong game inside. In the championship game on Sunday, the White team was matched up against the Folsom Force who they had split two games with so far during the season. The Dawgs jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead, but it turned into a very tight contest the rest of the way. The Force lead by two at half and was leading by six until Justin Kinney hit a 3 pointer at the end of the third quarter. The game came down to the last possession when the Dawgs played for the last shot trailing by two and Shane Baynes 3 pointer just missed. Final score was 33-31 Folsom Force. It was a hard fought game the Dawgs gave it their all. Will Greenwood lead scorers with 13 points including an acrobatic layup in the last minute. Shane played a strong overall game with 6 points, 6 rebounds and at least 4 steals. Coach Gee said "Shane was inspirational in the team huddles! We are starting to realize our potential as a team. I love coaching this team!"

Mark Greenwood

6th Grade Blue-April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

6th grade Blue won the Championship with a hard earned victory on Sunday after cruising to two victories on Saturday. Strong defensive performance by Darren Nelson, Charley Tooley and Marcus Ante. Strong shooting by Wes Preece and once again Charley Tooley. A strong team effort on offense and defense led to this weekends victory.

6th Grade White-April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

This weekend, the YBA 6th Grade White team participated in the “Tahoe Qualifier” at Rocklin High School. New team mate Elijah Winters joined us for his first tournament as a DAWG and scored 11 points!!!! Way to go Elijah! The players scored 44 points in their first game and won! Noah Novotny was the top scorer with 14 points. Nick Cherry contributed with 6 assists. We scored 35 points in the second game and 29 in the third game but not enough to win. Exciting basketball to watch, with lots of spectator support for the team. Each week this new team appears to jell together stronger and stronger.

Tournament Champions!!

Game One YBA 38 - Reno Ballers Blue 30

In a delayed and "condensed time frame" game (two halves, running clock) on a smaller than usual court, the team adjusted to the situation and overcame some mental mistakes to move on to the winners bracket. Game leaders were Jashon Lewis (11 points, 5-7 fgs, 6 steals, 3 assists), and Ethan Wainwright (4-6 from the field).

Game Two YBA 50 - Cameron Park Bruins 20

Opponent was undersized and overmatched in this game. Though YBA was off to a slow start, they picked it up in the second half and the "smothering defense" was hard to score on. Team held the opponent to one basket in the third and fourth quarters. Coach said "When the defense is clicking and working and all cylinders, and there is a great team effort from each player, the offense is easy." Game leaders were Alex Martinez (12 points, 6-10 fgs, 9 boards), Blake Pifer (11 points, 3-3 FTs), Jashon Lewis (4 steals) and Joshua Ohara (3 assists).

Game Three YBA 55 - Fairfield Ballers 31

Playing for the championship against a very athletic team, with two "bigs", coach challenged the team to win the "battle of the boards". Every player contributed to the cause, with Alex Martinez leading the way with 10 points, 16 boards (12 offensive), 4 assists and Ethan Wainwright (11 boards) and Jashon Lewis (12 points, 8 boards) also making huge contributions. Also making sure they were not left out were Alex Schneider (3-5 fgs) and Joshua Ohara (4 assists). Coach Ohara said "Bryson Zorich played an all-around great game (9 pts, 4 rebs, 3 assts, 3 steals, 1 TO) and played tough, gritty defense that helped the team win", also "Blake Pifer's 'no quit' attitude and hustle helped to push the opponent into a number of key turnovers to help put the game out of reach.”

Favorite play of the game: Opponent shoots the ball, Alex Schneider boxes his man (a big) out of bounds which allows Ethan to sweep in for the rebound, make a quick outlet to the wing, who hits a streaking player cutting to the middle for an easy transition layup. TEXTBOOK!

Quote from one game referee: "Your team has a VERY HIGH basketball IQ! probably one of the highest I have seen in your age group. They move the ball well, and seem to just know where to be on the court!"

Outstanding Player for the Weekend: Alex Martinez (Consistent the whole weekend), Mr. Hustle player of the weekend: Jashon Lewis (100% each game, played LOTS of minutes, never quit).

Coach Lance Ohara

5th Grade White- April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

This past weekend was set for a trying time for the 5th grade YBA white team since we are down to 6 players, but despite the lack of a full team the boys played hard and aggressive. The first game we lost by a few with high points coming from Nick Ohler with 22. The Second game was much harder fought with four of our players in double digits making it a successful win.

Highlight player Jeremy Lillis with a double, double in points and rebounds.

Third game was the toughest with only 5 players. We lost by a few with Brendyn Ikeda being high point scorer with 18 points all in the paint.

3rd Grade-April 24-25 Tahoe Qualifier

Our accomplishments this weekend were great! Although we did not take the trophy home this tournament, we made it to the championship game again as a 3rd grade team in a 4th grade bracket. Most important...our boys gave it their best shot and never gave up! Our team definitely not only used this tournament to improve their fundamentals, but revealed their huge desire and heart to play hard against any team......exactly what our goal is. The team's work ethics were awesome!

FIRE..........Our kids use that very important word to emphasize the importance of working hard each second on defense. Because we are a young team, in comparison, our boys understand the importance of keeping pressure on their opponents every second of the game. Our team did exceptionally well doing just that against all three teams that we played this weekend. Our weekly improvement of being on fire has been noticeable in every player. Josh is one of our newest players on our team. Josh has shown huge improvement in knowing what to do on the defense and offense which provides him the ability to use his natural talent. His improvement to be on fire was very noticeable this weekend. Mathew and Evan did exceptionally well following the coaches instructions. Both Mathew and Evan really improved in stepping up to defend against a player driving into the middle....great job, boys! They used their fire to not allow the offensive player make that basket. Their fire gave them the strength to box out and get those rebounds that the coaches asked them to fight for. Awesome!

Our last two days in practice, the team worked on head fakes and jab steps. Bennett really did a great job with his head fakes in the # 5 ("big man") position. His head fakes and/or jabs made the defender leave his feet giving Bennett an opportunity to drive straight to the basket. Awesome! Another area of improvement was the trapping abilities that I saw in our boy's full court defense, especially in the first and second games. Wow........what a huge task for our boys to do so young and they did it well! Dante, Cole, and Nathan used their quick feet and intense defense to provide awesome pressure to help keep the full court pressure on the other teams. Great job boys! Andrew and Johnny were able to either deny the pass during the full court pressure or anticipate the pass to get the steal. With their quick feet, they were able to assist in making sure the pressure was intense on defense at all times.

The 3rd grade Dawgs gave a really strong and solid team effort this weekend. I am proud to be a part of the team and YBA family that we have. Great job boys!
