Tournament Champions!!
Game One YBA 38 - Reno Ballers Blue 30
In a delayed and "condensed time frame" game (two halves, running clock) on a smaller than usual court, the team adjusted to the situation and overcame some mental mistakes to move on to the winners bracket. Game leaders were Jashon Lewis (11 points, 5-7 fgs, 6 steals, 3 assists), and Ethan Wainwright (4-6 from the field).
Game Two YBA 50 - Cameron Park Bruins 20
Opponent was undersized and overmatched in this game. Though YBA was off to a slow start, they picked it up in the second half and the "smothering defense" was hard to score on. Team held the opponent to one basket in the third and fourth quarters. Coach said "When the defense is clicking and working and all cylinders, and there is a great team effort from each player, the offense is easy." Game leaders were Alex Martinez (12 points, 6-10 fgs, 9 boards), Blake Pifer (11 points, 3-3 FTs), Jashon Lewis (4 steals) and Joshua Ohara (3 assists).
Game Three YBA 55 - Fairfield Ballers 31
Playing for the championship against a very athletic team, with two "bigs", coach challenged the team to win the "battle of the boards". Every player contributed to the cause, with Alex Martinez leading the way with 10 points, 16 boards (12 offensive), 4 assists and Ethan Wainwright (11 boards) and Jashon Lewis (12 points, 8 boards) also making huge contributions. Also making sure they were not left out were Alex Schneider (3-5 fgs) and Joshua Ohara (4 assists). Coach Ohara said "Bryson Zorich played an all-around great game (9 pts, 4 rebs, 3 assts, 3 steals, 1 TO) and played tough, gritty defense that helped the team win", also "Blake Pifer's 'no quit' attitude and hustle helped to push the opponent into a number of key turnovers to help put the game out of reach.”
Favorite play of the game: Opponent shoots the ball, Alex Schneider boxes his man (a big) out of bounds which allows Ethan to sweep in for the rebound, make a quick outlet to the wing, who hits a streaking player cutting to the middle for an easy transition layup. TEXTBOOK!
Quote from one game referee: "Your team has a VERY HIGH basketball IQ! probably one of the highest I have seen in your age group. They move the ball well, and seem to just know where to be on the court!"
Outstanding Player for the Weekend: Alex Martinez (Consistent the whole weekend), Mr. Hustle player of the weekend: Jashon Lewis (100% each game, played LOTS of minutes, never quit).
Coach Lance Ohara
