This was a weekend of both wins and losses, but the third grade DAWGs can walk away with heads held high. They are learning that losses can be just as important as wins, as lots can be learned from both.
One thing that really stands out from our games this weekend is our amazing DAWGs defense. We have some terrific defensive players overall, but a couple that really stood out during our Saturday games were Matthew and Bennett. Way to get in there and block those offensive players and even get their hands on that ball with these blocks. Bennett was a key scorer in our last game as well, with 8 points.
We may have even out rebounded that zippy Red Raiders team too, and held them while our offensive game took shape. We were able to bring our score up from being down by 12, to within 1 point by deploying a very active "on fire" full court defense (led by Andrew, Nathan and Dante), but got out scored during the last quarter. Matt also earned the "BIG Scoop Ice Cream" award for ripping down 8 of those rebounds and both Matt and Bennett look promising to reel in the "Double Big Scoop" for 10 rebounds in upcoming tournaments if they continue with their blocking out, hustle, and competitiveness.
Josh had some great moves, shots and passes in our games, and Cole was right in there with some tricky shot fakes trying to throw off the defense. Dante's ability to sneak in and force turnovers continues to be a big asset to the team. The third graders had some great reads, and our overall ability to move as a team is really taking shape.
One last thing that deserves mentioning is our outstanding group of parents, grandparents, siblings and friends who fill the stands each week and shout from the rooftops words of encouragement and praise for each and every player. The boys really do seem to respond well to this. No matter what, win or lose, the DAWGs crowd is there after every game with hands outstretched for hugs and high fives for our hard working, deserving players!
